A Rude Intrusion :: Day 71

This is my blog for day 71 of cancer treatment and recovery, Tuesday, 19 Sep 2017.

No doctor appointments today. In fact, I have none until the end of the month.

I took the CRV in to the Honda dealer today to have it detailed. When we picked it up it was like it was brand new again (though it's a 2009). I think we're going to bring in the Accord after the winter for the same treatment.

We looked at new cars while at the dealership. Nancy observed that the seats in the CRV didn't seem like they were up to the standard they should uphold. They seemed "cheap", even in the Touring model. The Pilot's seats, on the other hand, were beautiful. I hope Honda turns this around before we buy the next CRV, or we'll be buying the more expensive Pilot.

Nancy really liked the Pilot, so I told her that we would look for a 2018 Pilot Touring model when I retire in four years. That will make it a three-year old car, and should bring the price down some . . . but perhaps not much. And if that's the case, we'll be buying "new".

While the car was being serviced, Nancy and I went to the Von Bergen farm stand, a nice little drive in the country, up through and then west of Richmond. We bought a bunch of stuff, then headed on into Alden, but didn't stop at any of the antique stores, and simply headed back home on IL 47.

I've had all three meals by mouth again today, but the back right part of my mouth sometimes get irritated and slightly painful, so I'm careful with not only what I eat, but also how I eat. I chew mostly on the left, and drink a lot of water to make sure everything goes down smoothly. But that's everything by mouth since Friday morning!

Found out that I cannot drink orange juice - probably because of the acid - as it burns the afore-mentioned right side. Ditto for wine. I had a couple sips of Moscato, and it was clear that I need to wait until more healing is complete. Perhaps I'll stick to soft foods only for the next couple of days to foster the healing. I can eat oatmeal for breakfast, and I did buy some cottage cheese today, and can have that with thin-sliced Krakus ham and muenster cheese for lunch. That only leaves dinner, and I bought some Oscar Mayer all-beef hot dogs, so . . .

Here's another poem I wrote, from 2000, again. With the violence in the city nowadays it seems dated, I suppose, partly. Still, only time will tell . . .

Thoughts on Lake Shore Drive

Chicago’s really not that windy
Though her politicians are
But the pols ain’t out and about
When you slide your car
Into a lane on Lake Shore Drive.

The wide expanse of
Lake Michigan on one side,
On the other, expensive condo buildings
Lined up tall and wide
Peering out over the road.

Downtown is a sparkling jewel
A harpists strings waiting to be plucked
Stores, everywhere, and restaurants,
Bars; hidden treasures tucked
Among spires of stone, brick, steel and glass.

Now you’re south to Soldier Field
A monument to those who died
Defending us, and our freedom
In whom we show great pride
And only with monuments can repay.

Past Hyde Park and farther
South along the drive you go
Looking back o’er your shoulder
You draw in the breadth of a city so
Modern; beautiful; peaceful.

A city not without its’ problems
Racial, social divides and hate
But somehow, the City That Works;
A daily test of wills and, simply, fate:

Only time will prove your greatness.
