A Rude Intrusion :: Day 55

This is my blog for day 55 of cancer treatment and recovery, Saturday, 2 Sep 2017.

Only recovery today - no doctor's appointments.

Beautiful sleeping last night - window was open, comforter was pulled up to my neck and the temperature outside dropped into the 40s!

Nancy and some of the family are going to Abby Landwehr's wedding today on the 4 1/2 acre Landwehr Farm in McHenry. I don't know that I'll go - I've pretty much ruled it out - as I'm not sure I'm up to it. I wouldn't stay for the reception, just the ceremony. But it still might be too much, given my experience in going to the market yesterday and running out of gas at Sonja's.

I didn't go. I'm sitting here in my dad's chair, taking in a bag of goop (a tube feeding), watching Michigan and Florida play football. I did go out to CostCo today, to buy a few things, and it felt pretty good doing so. Getting back to "real life" in some ways.

Speaking of my dad, he always used to say that "amateurs" came out to go shopping on the weekend, while "professionals" shopped during the week. That may have been the case today. While I like to get in and get out, there was definitely a kind of a circus feeling to the crowd going into the store. Lots of kids, too, getting in the way, everywhere. It didn't take me too long to move into areas that most people only touched on (Ziploc bags, napkins, et al) so it wasn't too, too bad.

One bit of bad news today: the letter I wrote to my birth mother was returned "address unknown". I was thinking that might be the case, but wasn't sure. So now I need to look again, and see if I can find an address (or addresses) and try to make contact. I'm not too disturbed by it, not taking it too hard, as I knew there was always a chance, even in making contact, that she wouldn't want to talk to me. And that's OK, as I've had a great life!

I did a bit more research, using Ancestry.com and the Internet, and believe that I have found a half-sister and a sister-in-law (on Facebook). I sent them both private messages; we'll see what happens. Oh, and my birth mother (at least I think she is) has updated her Facebook page, though I don't want to approach her through Facebook, just yet.

Soooo . . . I wrote to both a sister-in-law and a half-sister via Facebook Messenger. Being Labor Day weekend, I wasn't sure I would hear anything from anyone. But I immediately heard from my half-sister: "I am going to have to believe this is a scam but I will be open to a conversation." Then she sent me her phone number, and we spoke for an hour. I can't write down everything we talked about, but her reticence turned to happiness in finding a brother. And I a sister.

I have the correct address for my birth mother, so I'll be sending another letter. And we'll see what happens from there. But now I'm really hopeful!

I'm trying to think of something to list from YouTube, but I'm not sure what it should be. So I'm going to fall back to a song by Carolyn Arends: Reaching - Link. It's one of her best, with lines that may describe, in some way, what I'm now going through with my search for family:

We are reaching for the future
We are reaching for the past
And no matter what we have we reach for more

We are desperate to discover
What is just beyond our grasp
Maybe that's what Heaven is for
