A Rude Intrusion :: Day 63

This is my blog for day 63 of cancer treatment and recovery, Monday, 11 Sep 2017.

No doctor's appointments today!

Remember those who lost their lives this day in 2001.

It's also five years since I had my double-hip replacement surgery, on this date in 2012.

Drove Nancy to her treatment today for the first time in weeks. Kerry had been taking her - thank you, Kerry - but it's my turn again. I ran an errand, visited an antique store and bought my lunch at Mariano's, then returned to the hospital. All before Nancy got her lunch.

I tried to eat today, but only with moderate success. I purchased a chocolate-covered cake doughnut, soaked it in milk and was able to eat it all. That's the good news. I also purchased some mashed potatoes, a little pot roast and some carrots, then soaked everything in au jus. But I really couldn't eat it. I tried, but just could not eat more than a little of what I took. Still, I finished 300 calories worth of milk and an entire doughnut, which my Fitbit tells me is around 175 calories. So I must have had at least 500 calories by mouth, and that's pretty good (even if it's full of fat calories).

I commented on Nancy's college friends coming up to see us and Laura, but neglected to post a photo. Here is one:

Nancy's mom Sonja is at front left, with Laura to her left. The back row is Patti, Nancy, Kathy, Georgia and Teri. Love these gals!

Spent a lot of the second half of the day watching Ken Burns' documentary The Civil War. It took me in and I could not stop. I think the best quote about the conduct of that war is from the author Shelby Foote, where he describes how he thought the north fought the war, "with one hand tied behind their back", having much more industry and raw material to work with, to say nothing of men, especially immigrants. In his view, if the south had made progress in attacking the north, the other hand would have been loosened, and the north would have brought it down hard, and still won the war.

Another quote has to do with a meeting between President Lincoln, General Grant, General Sherman and an Admiral whose name I cannot recall. After the meeting, General Sherman said, of President Lincoln, "Of all the men I ever met he seemed to me to possess more of the elements of greatness, combined with goodness, than any other." Sherman never saw the President again.

Oh, and one more thing: I believe it was said that General Grant never paid much attention to marching music, so little that he said he only knew two tunes: one was Yankee Doodle, and the other wasn't . . . smile!

Today's YouTube music, then, is Yankee Doodle, by the Marine Band - Link. As a two-fer, you also get The Battle Hymn Of The Republic, by The United States Army Field Bank - Link. Finally, for my friends from the south, Dixie - Link.
